A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SAN MIGUEL

Getting To San Miguel de Allende Cómo llegar a San Miguel de Allende ............... Go To Top of Page
Documentation
Proof of citizenship will be required when traveling to Mexico.  This means you will need a valid, current passport.

Transportation
We highly recommend that you fly into Leon (BJX), and then get an airport shuttle to San Miguel (about 1 to 1 1/2 hour shuttle ride).  Shuttle service can be arranged through one of the several shuttle agencies in town. Viajes San Miguel is one such agency, and they can be contacted at (011 52 415 152 2537), or take a look at their website:
www.viajessanmiguel.com.  Other shuttle services can be found at: www.internetsanmiguel.com/tours.html.  We use for ourselves and recommend or friend, Martin Gonzalez Martin's email is gonzaleztours@hotmail.com Tele/Fax: 011 52 (415) 152 5552 (His home where his wife often answers, but only speaks Spanish). We recommend telephoning him on his cellular: 044 415 151 0915. Martin runs a fleet of cars and vans and speaks both Spanish and English. He has proven very reliable. Another less expensive option to get to San Miguel is to fly into Mexico City, and then take a bus from the airport to San Miguel (about a 4 hour bus ride).  The bus service from Mexico City is first class on very clean and luxurious buses, and costs about US $50.  A small meal is provided, a movie is shown, and restroom facilities are available on the bus.

If you think you'd like to have a rental car during your stay, they can be rented from Hertz at either the Leon or Mexico City airports.  Here's the
Hertz website; select the "Oficinas de Alquiler" button on the left-hand bar, and then select which location you would like to pick up a rental car.  Rental cars can also be rented in San Miguel at Hola Rent-a-Car if you would like to have a vehicle for day-trips.  Once is San Miguel, it is easy to get around on foot, by taxi, or by bus, so we think that renting a car to get around town is unnecessary.

Click on this link for a nice color indexed street map showing the Centro district of San Miguel. It's a pdf file, so you will need Adobe Reader to view and print the map; you can download it here for free at Adobe's website. If you don't want to fool around with the pdf map, try this site. Both maps are courtesy of InternetSanMiguel.

San Miguel de Allende is located in the central highlands of Mexico at an elevation of about 6,400 feet, in the state of Guanajuato. San Miguel was founded in 1524 by Fray San Miguel, a Spanish Franciscan missionary, and the town still maintains its Spanish colonial charm. It is considered the birthplace of Mexico's independence, since one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution, Ignacio Allende, was born and raised here in San Miguel. You will find many beautiful churches, art galleries, restaurants, shops, and nightclubs along San Miguel's narrow, cobblestone streets. There are many fun and interesting things to do in and around San Miguel, and there are often festivities with parades, fireworks, and music. There's a link to the left where you can see what the current weather is like in San Miguel.

Places to Stay in San Miguel de Allende
There are many fine places to stay in San Miguel, ranging from economy class to refined luxury.  There are also options on the types of places to stay, depending on your needs and the length of your stay.  For people making extended trips (1 to 2 weeks) to San Miguel, we would recommend renting an apartment or house.  Many Americans own furnished homes and apartments here, and rent them out part of the year.  For families or large groups that would enjoy sharing a residence, a house is definitely the most economical and comfortable way to spend time in San Miguel.  There are also many beautiful Bed & Breakfast Inns (B&B's) located in town, and, of course, hotels.  We have put together a short list of hotels, B&B's, and apartment complexes that we would recommend for your accommodations.  There are, of course, many, many more places to stay in San Miguel that we have not listed.  If you want further information about places to stay, contact your travel agent or there are many tourist information websites that list accommodations.  Here are a few websites to look at for accommodations in San Miguel:
